Safe, vibrant and healthy communities

Safe, vibrant and healthy communities

Although most types of crime have come down since 2010, every crime has a victim and is a tragedy for someone.  I support the commitment to more police for Hampshire, starting with recruiting 156 more officers next year.

Our towns and villages are much more than just places.  Our high streets, shops and pubs are community resources.  We need housing that’s affordable for people growing up here to stay here.  And I support the principle of a Digital Services Tax, to level the playing field with online sellers.

We rightly have more focus than ever on mental health, and as education secretary I was pleased to bring in more support for young people’s mental wellbeing.  Most recently, I was working on a Private Member’s Bill – the “Internet (protection of children)” Bill – to deal with some of the pressures and harmful content children experience in social media and elsewhere in technology.
